SUBSTATE PREVIEW: Mills, Walker Key to Another State Tourney Berth

A ‘Walk’ Into the ‘Mill’

Two years ago, the Walker-Mills duo made their Sectional debut with a scratch-and-claw overtime victory over visiting Goodpasture.  Since then, though, many Eagle players have flourished under the Van Buren system, resulting in their third straight substate appearance, at home no less.

Mills seemed to be a viable Mr. Basketball candidate, averaging 26.6 PPG this season but was skipped over by media and coach voting.  Luckily, though, the hardwood harbors a team sport, so Mills and his Spencer-centered Swooshers still have a chance to make history.

By now, the Pickett and Van Buren fans have gotten to know each other.  The Eaglettes fell to the Lady Bobcats 75-40 Saturday night, so the Mills-led squadron will be out for vengeance in the Monday night affair.

So grabbing a state tourney berth would be all the more sweet for folk of Spencer.

That being, said, this contest could go down to the wire and possibly to the final seconds with both teams having notoriety for shooting rather well.  And neither defense is too shabby either.

So please, let us take you for a ‘walk’ through the ‘mill’ because it’ll just be another day at the loud and often deafening office inside that iconically small gymnasium.
