How’s Your Team Faring?

No. 2–Sequatchie County [1 First Place Vote] (9-0, 5-0 R4-3A)

The Indians picked up their second 1st Place vote of the season, while also picking up a region win against Grundy County, 49-0 but failed to move up in the polls above No. 1 Alcoa, which holds 14 of the first place votes.  Sequatchie County is one of three undefeated teams in the top ten and one of two in the top five.  No other 4-3A team is joining them in the Top Ten this week.  The Indians have claimed wins over South Pittsburg (27-20), Whitwell (61-20), Smith County (19-14), York Institute (35-20), Bledsoe County (15-12), Dekalb County (20-3), Warren County (33-27), Cannon County (50-16), and now Grundy County (49-0) this season.  They’ll be on the road this week as they travel to Upperman in a game that almost mattered had the Bees won last week against Dekalb County.

Tied for No. 2–Marion County (8-1, 6-0 R3-2A)

The Warriors keep the No. 2 spot–somewhat–after their bye week leading into another region showdown.  The Warriors shortened the gap between themselves and Adamsville but are currently tied with Forrest.  They remain behind Adamsville (No. 1) in the polls despite beating Boyd-Buchanan (No.2 at the time) and currently No. 6 Meigs County in dominant fashion.  The Warriors’ resume includes 8 wins against Bledsoe County, Silverdale, Tyner, Boyd-Buchanan, Brainerd, Grundy County, region foe Meigs County, and Class 4A Hixson.  They narrowly lost to the Pirates earlier in the season, who are currently ranked No. 4 in Class 1A Poll.  Marion County will go up against Polk County in the season finale.

No. 4–South Pittsburg (5-1, 4-0 R3-1A)

Now taking the No. 4 spot in the poll, the Pirates have garnered little attention–even with wins against two teams currently ranked in the Class 2A Poll.  South Pittsburg took down Boyd-Buchanan in dominant fashion at home with a 52-19 win against the Buccaneers.  Unlike the Warriors and Indians, the Pirates have a lot of teams between them and the number one ranking, including Wayne County, Greenback, and Dresden (of which the latter two hold at least one 1st place vote), but that number is dwindling as the season continues.  Vic Grider and his upstart squad have pulled together after an upsetting defeat in Dunlap to start out the season.  And upsetting the Warriors should only be the start of a run to Cookeville, but they’ve still got time to surge up the polls as well.  The only problem is their region, which has been lackluster in previous years.  They travel to Grace Baptist to tie up loose ends in 3-1A in week eleven.
