How’s Your Team Faring?

No. 2–Sequatchie County (6-0, 3-0 R4-3A)

The Indians picked up a huge win against Class 6A Warren County team in the final minutes, 33-27, but failed to move up in the polls above No. 1 Alcoa, which holds 15 of the first place votes.  Adam Caine and crew lost more overall points (down 17 from last week).    Sequatchie County is one of three undefeated teams in the top ten and one of two in the top five.  No other 4-3A team is joining them in the Top Ten this week.  The Indians have claimed wins over South Pittsburg (27-20), Whitwell (61-20), Smith County (19-14), York Institute (35-20), Bledsoe County (15-12), Dekalb County (20-3), and now Warren County (33-27) this season.  They play host to Region 4-3A bottom feeder Cannon County in a homecoming matchup.

No. 2–Marion County (6-1, 4-0 R3-2A)

The Warriors kept on winning as they took down an upstart Silverdale team on Friday night.  The Warriors shortened the gap between themselves and Adamsville as the Cardinals .  They remain behind Adamsville (No. 1) in the polls despite beating Boyd-Buchanan (No.2 at the time) in dominant fashion.  The Warriors’ resume includes 7 wins against Silverdale, Tyner, Boyd-Buchanan, Brainerd, Grundy County, region foe Meigs County, and Class 4A Hixson.  They narrowly lost to the Pirates who are currently ranked No. 5 in Class 1A Poll.  Marion County hosts Valley foe Bledsoe County in Jasper Friday.

No. 5–South Pittsburg (5-1, 2-0 R3-1A)

Now taking the No. 5 spot in the polls after jumping up at least one spot in previous weeks, South Pittsburg took down Sale Creek in dominant fashion inside Beene Stadium.  Unlike the Warriors and Indians, the Pirates have a lot of teams between them and the number one ranking, including Wayne County, Greenback, Union City, and Dresden (of which the latter three hold at least one 1st place vote), but that number is dwindling as the season continues.  South Pittsburg lost points overall this week in the polls keeping them at nearly the same margin behind Wayne County.  Vic Grider and his upstart squad have pulled together after an upsetting defeat in Dunlap to start out the season.  And upsetting the Warriors should only be the start of a run to Cookeville, but they’ve still got time to surge up the polls as well.  The only problem is their region, which has been lackluster in previous years.  They travel to Lookout Valley for a Region 3-1A matchup.
